    Well how about just a stand alone DVR? It would be like programming an old VCR but you don't have to pay the monthly dues. I have also known people to set up Linux boxes and use them as DVRs. Maybe http://www.mythtv.org/ ? And check out this article – http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8562.
